Talk to me

WIRED has a story about voice recognition going mainstream.

Speech technology has long languished in the no-man’s land between sci-fi fantasy (“Computer, engage warp drive!”) and disappointing reality (“For further assistance, please say or press 1 …”).

But that’s about to change, as advances in computing power make voice recognition the next big thing in electronic security and user-interface design.

Carver Mead at CalTech introduced me to one of his former students, Lloyd Watts, several years ago. Lloyd was creating voice recognition technology by studying the way the human ear processes audio signals. Seemed to me the right way to go about creating the technology. Lloyd is founder of Audience.

Will be interesting to see how voice recognition evolves. Needless to say, I’m long the technology.
