Google in 3D

Here’s a little news nugget that caught my eye today:

Google has released a new browser plugin and API for developers aimed at bringing 3D graphics and interactive content to the Web browser. The plugin is based on O3D, the new API developed by Google and introduced earlier this week.

Google also  recently announced plans to join in the development and contribute technology towards a standard for plugin-free 3D being developed by Mozilla and the Khronos group. The company says that the two projects are part of a common goal “to see the web offering the same type of 3D experiences that can be found on the desktop”  and should be viewed as complementary rather than competitive.

Google’s O3D is an open-source web API for creating rich, interactive 3D applications in the browser. This API is shared at an early stage as part of a conversation with the broader developer community about establishing an open web standard for 3D graphics. O3D allows users to create rich 3D web applications using JavaScript.

It will be interesting to watch how Google’s 3D web browser technology develops in the future.
